The power of 5,000

I had occasion to visit a large metro Atlanta county a few days ago and talk to them about VDI. I used a Capital (CAPEX) and Operational Expense (OPEX) spreadsheet to calculate their cost savings in a variety of expenses including IT labor, equipment and electricity. Over a four-year period they would have saved the county about $16 million if they had implemented VDI in 2006. That’s big money for everyone… except for the Feds. Chump change to them.

If you think about it, this county has to keep well over 5,000 discrete computers going. That’s a big, expensive job. With VDI, it could be 60. I’m not suggesting that VDI is the solution to every ill, but if you consider CAPEX and OPEX it makes a compelling case.
